Rothschild Banking Family: Part of Our Court Jews of Vienna-Connection to Oppenheimer

Nadene Goldfoot

Through the familyfinder test at Family Tree DNA, I find that I am connected to Rothschild by DNA.  Out of 5 matches, 2 are 4th cousins and the other 3 are 5th cousins.  One 4th cousin listed Oppenheimer as his connection and I am also connected to Oppenheimer.     Rothschild would be among the court Jews of Vienna.

                                       Our Rothschild Connections

My brother matches with 2  Rothschilds, 1 4th  cousin and 1 5th cousin
My son matches with 1 Rothschild that I match, also as a 5th cousin.
My paternal cousin matches with 3 Rothschilds, 1 2nd cousin and 2 4th cousins.  .
Her nephew matches with 3 Rothschilds
My son's wife's brother matches 5 Oppenheim but no Rothschild.  I match 3 Oppenheim , all as 5th cousins.  This daughter-in-law's brother matches the same Oppenheims that match me but 1 is a 4th and 2 are 5th cousin.  Then he matches 2 more; a 4th and a 5th.  One that had matched me as a 5th matched him as a 4th.

Baron Mayer Amschel Rothschild

The Rothschild Banking family  is a family of financier and philathropists taking their name from a house at the sign of the "red shield" at Frankfort-on-Main, where its family were founded by Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812), who died at age 69 in Frankfort,  on wikipedia and the encyclopedia as below, originally a dealer in antique coins, who became financial agent to the landgrave of Hesse-Cassel during the French Revolutionary wars.  He had 5 sons who established themselves in different European centers.  The many branches of the House of Rothschild are dealt with individually in entries.  Many have omitted the common title of baron and the suffixes "de" and "von."

Mayer Amschel Rothschild was born in 1744 in the ghetto in Frankfurt. At the age of 13, he went to Hanover to serve an apprenticeship with the bank of Simon Wolf Oppenheimer. At the age of 19, he returned to Frankfurt. There he joined his brother Calmann's money-changing business. He became a dealer in rare coins and won the patronage of Wilhelm IX of Hesse, gaining the title of "court factor". Rothschild's coin business expanded through the provision of banking services to Wilhelm IX. His bank became one of the biggest in Frankfurt.

Referred to as the "founding father of international finance," Rothschild was ranked seventh on the Forbes magazine list of "The Twenty Most Influential Businessmen of All Time" in 2005.

  • It was Edmond (Baron Edmond de Rothschild 1845-1934), son of James Rothschild of France (1792-1868)  who was interested in intellectual and artistic pursuits and built up a great art collection. Edmond  and his wife, Adelaide Rothschild nee Rothschild, were attached to their Jewish traditions.  James, his father, was the 5th son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild.  James had founded the Paris house in 1817.

  •  The first Zionist pioneers in Palestine appealed to Edmond in the early 1880's at the time of the 1st Aliyah from Russia and he wanted to save them from financial collapse.  He supported Palestinian colonization and took under his protection all the new settlements which would have had to be liquidated had it not been for his aid.  What he did was send agricultural experts and officials who didn't always agree with the settlers.  Many of the failure were caused by these very officials, but they educated the new agricultural population of Palestine.

                                                                 Austria

Salomon Mayer Rothschild (1774-1855)  lived in Vienna from 1816 and developed the Austrian branch of the firm, with his attention on the industrial development and railroad construction.  His line was followed by:
Anselm Rothschild (1803-1874)
Albert Solomon Rothschild (1844-1892).  His sons were held for ransom by the Nazis after their seizure of Vienna in 1938 when the firm was ended, existing no more.

"Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (September 9, 1774 – July 28, 1855) was the 2nd son but 3rd child  of Mayer Amschel Rothschild,  a German-born banker in the Austrian Empire and the founder of the Austrian branch of the prominent Mayer Amschel Rothschild family.
He was born at Frankfurt-am-Main  of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812) and Gutlé Schnapper (1753–1849) was his mother.   In 1800, he married Caroline Stern (1782–1854). They had the following children:
  1. Anselm Salomon  Rothschild (1803–1874)
  2. Betty Salomon  Rothschild (1805–1886) - married her uncle,  James Mayer de Rothschild in 1824.  This is not unheard of.  Abraham had also married his niece, Sarah.

"Five lines of the Austrian branch of the family were elevated into the Austrian nobility, being given hereditary baronies of the Habsburg Empire by Emperor Francis II in 1816. The British branch of the family was elevated into the British nobility by Queen Victoria.

Amschel Rothschild, (1773-1855), oldest son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812 ,  had remained in Frankfort and was active there in the Jewish communal life.  His nephews from Naples, Mayer Karl Rothschild (1820-1886)  and Wilhelm Carl  Rothschild (1828-1901), succeeded him as head of the parent house, which closed down when Wilhelm died.  Wilhelm was strictly Orthodox.  "The Rothschild sons often included their fathers' names in their own, as we see from the example of Carl Meyer's sons, Meyer Carl and Wilhelm Carl, both of whom took over the Frankfurt branch when their Uncle Amschel left no sons.
